Does B2B Ecommerce Eliminate Sales Teams?

The success of many business-to-business companies was built through a strong sales team. This causes B2B owners and managers to often resist ecommerce because they see it as competing with those sales personnel. But the B2B market is radically changing. Increasingly, business buyers prefer shopping and ordering online. And the rise of Amazon Business and other innovative B2B ecommerce sites is forcing heretofore successful manufacturers, suppliers, and distributors to change. So how does a B2B company transition to ecommerce? How will it affect its sales team? It isn’t an either-or scenario. Ecommerce doesn’t eliminate or reduce the need for sales people. It is, instead, a tool that can increase the amount your salespeople can sell and improve their ability to compete. In fact, in my experience in implementing B2B sites, I’ve never seen a company downsize its sales team due to ecommerce. Integrating Ecommerce with Sales Personnel Obtaining support for...

Amazon’s B2B Site Evolving, Growing Rapidly

When AmazonSupply became Amazon Business in April 2015, much more than a rebranding occurred. With AmazonSupply, the company was the only seller. But Amazon Business copied the very successful marketplace approach of the regular Amazon site and welcomed more than 30,000 third-party vendors to offer their goods on the website. These vendors now account for more than half of all orders on Amazon Business. Amazon is now challenging major online business suppliers in office products (Staples) and industrial goods (Grainger). It has over nine million items for sale and all products available on the Amazon.com marketplace are also accessible on the Amazon Business site. In its first year, Amazon Business had revenue of over $1 billion. It is currently adding about 100,000 new accounts per quarter. Prentis Wilson, vice president of Amazon Business, stated earlier this year that the marketplace enjoys a 20 percent month-over-month sales growth rate. At the...

8 Innovative B2B Ecommerce Sites

B2B ecommerce sites are typically more complicated, with more features, than B2C. In this article, I will address eight innovative B2B ecommerce sites. My company has no business relationship with these examples. But they are compelling and they provide inspiration for other B2B merchants. Fisher Scientific Fisher Scientific is a provider of medical and laboratory equipment and supplies. Its website, FisherSci.com , makes a nice use of promotions. On the top right there is an invite to “Restock Your Lab with Up to 50% Off.” FisherSci.com uses a 50 percent off message targeted at its potential customers. When you click the “Restock Your Lab…” link to arrive at the promotions page, there are multiple offers, including those that allow you to trade in an older meter for a discount. When you click to take advantage of the offer, there’s a tab that explains the simple process to redeem the order. There is also an...

B2B Ecommerce: Pros and Cons of SaaS Platforms

Software-as-a-service ecommerce platforms are gaining market share. They have clear benefits, but they also have limitations, especially for B2B companies. SaaS platforms — hosted carts — charge a monthly fee to use the software, which is in the cloud. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of choices, such as Shopify, BigCommerce, and Volusion. Here are my pros and cons of SaaS platforms for B2B companies. Pros of SaaS Platforms Fast implementation time. Merchants can get a site up and running on these platforms with minimal effort. The platforms often offer pre-built layouts and themes that are mobile responsive. Depending on your needs, and your comfort with ecommerce, you may not need a developer at all. Less expensive. Many SaaS platforms charge as little as $100 per month, or less. Add-ons can increase this monthly fee. While those costs can increase over time, overall there is a low cost of entry....
