Chris Pietschmann Awarded 2019 Microsoft MVP in Azure

This morning I received an email notification that read “Congratulations 2019-2020 Microsoft MVP!” Today is the day I was eagerly awaiting for the last couple months. Today, I got received notification from Microsoft that I have been awarded the Microsoft MVP (Most Valuable Professional) award for the 2019 award year! A Brief History of My Microsoft MVP Experience This is my 8th time receiving the Microsoft MVP award, since my first time in 2008. Last year I posted a bit about my history with the Microsoft MVP program . In summary, I was originally awarded in the Virtual Earth expertise category (for 5 years in a row); which was eventually renamed Bing Maps . As a developer, I’ve always been a “developer” MVP. My specialization back then was, as a developer, working with the various REST APIs and SDKs for implementing GIS / Mapping integrations into line-of-business and other applications. In...

What authorizations do you need in order to fully leverage SAP for Me?

Hi everybody, As described in my blog A new beginning: SAP for Me – your digital companion in May, SAP for Me has now been launched. Although it is still an open beta, it is available to everyone, just with a few minor limitations here and there. Now, almost 2 months later, the most significant thing we have learned is that many people are not aware which authorizations they need in order to leverage SAP for Me. We also learned that we need to improve SAP for Me to make it self-explanatory in this respect. And in case you are wondering, we are already working on these points. I don’t want you to have to wait until SAP for Me can help you to get your authorizations right on its own however. With this in mind, I decided to write this blog so that you can help yourself and request all...

California Assembly Passes Smart Speaker Privacy Rules

On May 28th, by a 42-6 bipartisan vote, California’s state Assembly passed a  bill  to impose rules on manufacturers of Internet-connected devices sold in California that offer voice recognition features. The bill defines “voice recognition feature” as the function of a connected device that allows the “collection, recording, storage, analysis, transmission, interpretation or other use of spoken words or sounds,” except where voice commands are not recorded or transmitted beyond the device. The proposed amendment to Chapter 35 of the state’s Business and Professions Code–which already imposes similar rules on connected televisions–would firstly prohibit the operation of any connected device’s voice recognition features if the owner or designated user of the device is not prominently informed of the existence of such features during the initial setup or installation. Mobile phones, tablets, “smart” speakers such as Amazon Echo or Google Home, and other “Internet of Things” gadgets that can hear and respond...

How Close Are We to Digital Transformation in Procurement?

How Close Are We to Digital Transformation in Procurement? Key Findings from the JAGGAER 2019 Digital Procurement Survey Despite all the talk of digital transformation in procurement, the JAGGAER 2019 Digital Procurement Report reveals little change since 2017 . The report identifies the lack of budget and requisite IT skills, and lack of progress with data integration as well as lack of digital knowledge among procurement professionals themselves, as some of the most important obstacles to more rapid progress.   Key findings of the report include: 50% of procurement professionals rate their digital knowledge as up-to-date or excellent – unchanged since 201754% of organizations have now at least started the process of digitizing and automating standard procurement processes. But only 2% claim to have fully automated their procurement processes. More than a fifth still rely on fax and paperAs one might expect, larger organizations are more advanced both in terms of...

Afternoon Coffee: Truce on China Tariff Still Puts Pressure on Supply Chains; Levi’s Agrees to Cut Emissions

photonewman/Adobe Stock After more U.S. tariffs against China were put on hold, stocks and oil prices increased Monday , though there was no breakthrough on the economic conflict between the two countries, according to CNN. U.S. President Donald Trump agreed at the G20 summit in Japan to hold off on placing new tariffs on China, as well as to ease import restrictions against Huawei, a Chinese tech company. Trade talks are thought to be resuming soon. “Analysts think the lack of progress means that existing tariffs won't be lifted anytime soon, keeping pressure on supply chains and a lid on global growth,” said Charles Riley, CNN Business’ Europe editor. Levi Strauss Agrees to Cut Supply Chain Emissions One more clothing company has joined the list of those trying to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions , Business Green, a London-based news site focuses on transitioning to net zero waste. In the Q2 2019 release, SAP SuccessFactors Compensation included a new Custom Validation in its Beta stage (Not yet release in Production). Customers can now define up to three formula driven validations per template. Validations can be either hard or soft stops; customers also have the ability to customize message prompts per validation. However, the setup is a provisioning opt-in today therefore support from SAP or an implementation partner is required for now. Let’s take a look how this functionality may work for you.   First, let me cover the existing SAP SuccessFactors Compensation Validation: Standard Guidelines Pros: Customers are able include multiple attributes to derive a guideline library per Comp component. Standard Guidelines Cons: Only applies to standard Comp components (merit | lumpsum | lumpsum2 | extra | extra2 | promotion).Guideline programs do not...

David Houlding Principal Healthcare Program Manager, Industry Experiences Today’s healthcare organizations are expected to be agile, reduce costs, and direct capital toward revenue generating activities that improve patient outcomes. The cloud is a key part of the answer, but implementing a new solution on the cloud also requires new skills especially around governance, compliance with HIPAA, and security practices. The Azure platform offers a wealth of services for partners to enhance, extend, and build industry solutions. Here we describe how one Microsoft partner uses Azure to solve a unique problem. On a personal note

“There’s nothing more powerful than a good story!” – Tyrion Lannister, final episode, Game of Thrones   In many ways, 2019 seems to be the year of unexpected endings and surprising plot twists, both on and off the big screen. At SAP, this manifests by the company going all-in on experience management and doubling down on SAP’s vision of the intelligent enterprise. A new generation of board members stepped up to lead the company into the next era of enterprise computing and they bring a fresh perspective, attitude and mentality. In simple terms one could say that they are determined to push SAP’s own digital transformation, challenging the status quo and driving change. We all react differently to change – some actively embrace it, while others are more hesitant to accept it. Yet, most of us take change as a trigger to reflect on the past: on what was good, what...

Zycus Analyst Day — 3 Quick Insights

Along with colleagues Pierre Mitchell, Xavier Olivera and Nick Heinzmann, I attended Zycus ’ analyst day in Park City, Utah, on Friday. Analysts from Ardent, Gartner, Levvel (formerly Paystream) were also in attendance. While I’ll leave it to my esteemed colleagues to provide more insightful commentary on where Zycus stands today overall, let me share three quick insights that I walked away with. First, Zycus remains steadfast in its commitment to delivering a full suite of capabilities and driving to world-class support, including making continued investments and enhancements in its procure-to-pay capabilities. This includes not only platform- and application-level enhancements, but also focusing on delivering increased overall customer satisfaction. Spend Matters spoke to a number of Zycus customers at the event that echoed the continued improvements Zycus has made in availability/uptime, software quality, application/modular cohesiveness and related commitments. This is welcoming to hear, as Zycus needed to improve in these areas...

CloudFoundryFun #6 – Run TypeScript Apps on Cloud Foundry

In this sixth post in my CloudFoundryFun series , I will show how to code with TypeScript. You will learn about TypeScript and tools that can help you to use TypeScript in your daily development and deployment activities. I recently found this medium post that lists alternatives to JavaScript, one of which is TypeScript . While there is some truth to this, I wouldn’t call TypeScript an alternative per se. TypeScript is a superset of JavaScript. This means that all valid JavaScript code is also valid TypeScript code. One of the nice features of TypeScript is that it brings new ECMAScript features to “older legacy environments”. So you can make use of promises, iterators or template strings in your code and still run it on an older browser. This conversion of the TypeScript (.ts) files into regular JavaScript (.js) files is done by the TypeScript cross-compiler . These generated files will...

SAP Cloud Platform Backend service: Tutorial [29]: Shooting: Error: Forbidden

You’ve reached the very right blog for you, If you see this: Forbidden And: If you hate it In this blog, we’re going to learn how to do troubleshooting when we get the Forbidden Of course, this blog covers only scenarios reaching out to SAP Cloud Platform Backend service, as described in this series of tutorials What is the problem? We’ve created an API with SAP Cloud Platform Backend service. As we’ve learned  (e.g. here ) the APIs are protected with OAuth (see here and here for explanations) This means, when such a resource is requested, an access token has to be sent But what, if we get an error response? The error message could be: Forbidden What now? How to find the reason? How to fix? Troubleshooting is easier, if we open a URL and get a user-login screen. If login fails, we know we’ve entered the wrong password (or...

How Figaf can help manage SAP CPI

For the SAP CPI projects that I have been involved in, I have seen some challenges with how to use SAP CPI tool. It is some of them we have been adding to the Figaf IRT tool, making it a lot easier for you to run SAP CPI. Some of the features that we have implemented may at some point be implemented by SAP as a part of the standard SAP CPI flow. I know some are scheduled, but not when they will be delivered and the scope of them. I hope that we will be able to integrate the functions and still provide some better functions. I do think that some of the features will be useful for you, and make your SAP CPI development process even faster. About Figaf IRT Figaf IRT is an application, we started about 3 years ago to make it easier to test SAP PI/PO....

Pandas Python DataFrame: How to delete, select and add an index, row, or column?

A data frame is a method for storing data in rectangular grids for easy overview. If you have knowledge of java development and R basics, then you must be aware of the data frames. The measurements or values of an instant corresponds to the rows in the grid whereas the vectors containing data for a specific variable represent the column. Hence, the rows in the data frame can include values like numeric, character, logical and so on. Similar is the data frame in Python, which is labeled as two-dimensional data structures having different types of columns. The Python Pandas data frame consists of the main three principal components, namely the data, index and the columns. When it comes to data management in Python, you have to begin by creating a data frame . It is one of the easiest tasks to do. You can also add the parameters. After creating the...

Monday Knowledge Snippet (MKS) – 98 Package Builder – Footprint aka Normalized Quantities

The task of the Supply Chain Execution Package Builder (SCE PB) is to package items following the defined package type assignments and constraints. This results in an item hierarchy, where supplied (product) items are assigned to super-ordinate package items. Those package items hold information like how good they are utilized, dimensions, weight, and a package quantity in the corresponding unit of measure. The application calling the SCE PB can now decide what to do with this result – probably persist it in the business document. For scenarios with multiple different top level package materials it can be of essential interest to determine a normalized quantity. Such a normalized quantity transfers quantities in different units of measures into the same unit. This way different items can be compared. A typical business scenario would be that there are two package materials (in Europe for example the standard EU pallet and a pallet cage, or...

What’s Your Story? Coupa Brings Color, Context, Influence and Emotion to Inspire19

“The novelist who refuses sentiment refuses the full spectrum of human behavior, and then he just dries up. Irony is always scratching at your tired ass, whatever way you look at it, I would rather give full vent to all human loves and disappointments, and take a chance on being corny, than die a smartass.” — Jim Harrison From the time I learned to read, I’ve been the nerdiest word nerd, looking to get lost in the stories of others, sucking up context and emotions to ground my own experiences or go somewhere completely new. While I’ve gained my fair share of experience in the world creating my own living stories, I can’t understate the business (and sales, and marketing) value of immersing yourself in and sharing the stories of others. Think about the structure of a story: beginning, setting the stage, plot, character development, emotional upheaval, a lesson learned,...
